Thirty million speakers.
One braille code.
No software.
Standard Sindhi Braille was ratified by a Sindhi Language Authority committee in 2016. It is taught in schools and read by touch across Sindh today, and until this project it existed only on paper: no software could produce a single line of it.
This is the first digital
implementation of that code. A translator that works in both directions and
in both grades, a six-key braille writer, and liblouis tables so
screen readers and embossers can use it.

A code that existed on paper, and nowhere else
Braille for Sindhi was settled in 2016 by a committee of six under the Sindhi Language Authority. Textbooks are printed in it. Teachers teach it. Blind students read it.
But a braille code only becomes usable at scale when software knows it: when a screen reader can speak a page, when a teacher can type a worksheet and emboss it that afternoon, when a book can be converted instead of re-typed by hand. None of that existed for Sindhi. The world's open braille library, liblouis, ships tables for more than a hundred languages, and had nothing for Sindhi in the script Pakistan actually writes.
This project closes that gap, and does it without inventing anything: the code implemented here is the committee's, letter for letter.
"Since braille has only 63 signs … fixing signs for them is necessary; otherwise many ambiguities would arise everywhere."
Sindhi has more sounds and marks to write than braille has cells to write them with. The committee said so before anyone tried to put it in software.
Type Sindhi. Get braille you can emboss.
Everything runs in your browser.
Nothing is uploaded. Type a paragraph and watch it become braille, cell by
cell, with every he marked and every word it could not settle named. Whole
documents, folders of them, and the .brf file an
embosser reads are the workbench's work, below.
Typed anywhere else it is read as the ordinary ه, because that is what several Sindhi keyboards emit for it and آھي is آهي. The other way round, a plain ه after one of the seven, is decided by Riaz Hussain Memon's word list where it has ruled; where it has not, the software writes what you typed and names the word below.
Prose runs on; a bait does not. Verse writes the two opening cells of the stanza, dots 1-2-3-5-6 twice, standing on their own; then one more of the same cell hard against the end of every line; then a full stop where the stanza ends. The تخلص box is the poet's pen-name: dot 2 is written immediately before it wherever it appears in the poem. Guide pages 40 and 41.
This marks every line as a hemistich, which is right for a bait and wrong for prose. Paste one poem at a time.
Reading braille back into Sindhi is the harder direction. Twenty-five cells are a letter and a digit and a mark all at once, and nothing but position separates them. See why.
A machine cannot replace a transcriber. This software writes the code as the committee's book states it, but it cannot read. A correct transcription sometimes needs a person who understands what the sentence means, and where this software is not certain it says so rather than guessing quietly. Read what it says under the braille: where it names a word it could not settle, that word needs a human eye before the page is embossed.
For someone who already reads braille
A blind teacher does not want to type Sindhi letters. They want to type dots. This turns an ordinary keyboard into a braille writer, the same six keys as a Perkins brailler. No braille display, no special hardware. Press the keys for one cell together, as a chord, and release. On a phone the six dots are buttons, laid out in the shape of the cell. Tap the dots you want and write the cell. No braille display, no special hardware.
Click the box, then chord. Space = space · Backspace = delete a cell · Enter = new line.
A workbench for a braille press
The translator above answers one question: what does this sentence look like in braille. A press has a different question. Here is a folder of documents, turn them into embosser files, and let the transcriber overrule the translator where it is wrong without having to overrule it twice.
A folder at a time
Open a folder of Sindhi
documents and every one of them is listed. Saving writes the .brf
back beside the text, and the whole folder is embossed in one go, with a
report of what could not be written.
Corrections that stay corrected
Put the cursor in a word and type the cells it should be. The correction is kept beside the document in plain text, applied every time that document is translated, and can be kept for the whole folder so it is never made twice.
Made to be used without sight
Print on one side, braille on the other, and the cursor in one names the word in the other. Everything it does, it says out loud. A page view holds the file exactly as it will be embossed, one line to a line, for a braille display to read.
Down the sheet. Line 1 carries the page number, hard against the right margin, which is where every braille book puts it. Line 2 is blank. The text runs from line 3 to line 26. Line 27 is left blank so the last line is not against the edge.
Across it. Cells 1 to 8 are the binding margin, 9 to 45 are the text, 46 to 48 are the right margin. Eight cells is what a binding takes.
Both sides. A sheet bound along its left edge has its bound edge on the right when you turn it over. So on even pages the wide margin moves to the other side. Get this wrong and every second page is bound straight through its own text, which no reader can recover.
The workbench is a review build. It is given to named people while what it writes is still being checked, question by question, with Riaz Hussain Memon, and it is not published. If you set Sindhi books in braille and want to review it, write and say so.
Some rules need the whole sentence
Most people assume a braille translator is a lookup table: one letter in, one cell out. For Sindhi that gets you most of the way and then fails on ordinary schoolbook text: fractions, dates, a repeated word.
Rules that need more than one word
Three rules cannot go in a table, because you cannot decide them from one letter.
- A repeated word is written once, then two cells of dot 3. To know that, you have to compare two whole words.
- A fraction writes the top number in the ordinary digits and the bottom one in the same digits dropped a row. If the top number is 1 it is left out. You need both halves before you can write either.
- ع means عليه السلام after a prophet's name and عيسوي after a year. The cells are the same. Only the word before it tells you which.
That is why there is a translator as well as a table. Contracted braille adds more of the same kind, and they are set out with the contractions further down: which contractions may begin a longer word, and the three cells that mean one thing standing alone and another beside a letter.
Built twice, on purpose
There are two: a translator
that needs nothing installed, and liblouis tables for NVDA,
BrailleBlaster and the other open braille tools. They were written
separately, then held to each other over the whole word list.
Every disagreement meant one of them was wrong.
Every word of a 2,780-word list goes through both. In grade 1 they agree on 2,779. In grade 2 they agree on 2,744, and most of the rest are the ordinals, which need a rule about where a cell sits rather than a rule about letters, and no table can hold one.
Fifty-two letters
A raised dot is drawn solid, an unraised position faint, exactly how the committee's own printed font shows them. Hover a letter to lift it.
One rule, drawn: how a fraction is written
The guide calls the ordinary digits the Upper Sign and a fraction's denominator the Lower Sign. The lower digits are the same ten cells with every dot moved down one row. There is no fraction bar, and when the numerator is 1, it is not written at all.
Contracted braille gives one of these readings up. The number sign and the lower digit 4 is the fraction one quarter; it is also ماڻھو with a full stop after it. Reading contracted braille back, this software reads it as ماڻھو, because a quarter standing as a word of its own is rarer in prose than a man at the end of a sentence. Uncontracted, it is still the fraction.
Grade 2: writing less than the whole word
A braille page holds far less than an ink page, so no braille code writes every word out. Sindhi shortens 287 words, in seven chapters, and adds eleven pieces that are written only inside a word. Most contractions are a series sign and then one ordinary letter, and in 188 of the 203 of that kind the letter is the first letter of the word it stands for: dots 4-5 and then ز is زندگي, two cells for five.
The chapters are the chapters of the Grade 2 book, and the counts come from the list the translator itself reads.
Which of them may start a longer word
Neither book states this in words, and it decides the whole shape of the output. A contraction that carries a series sign may begin a longer word, with the rest spelled out after it: dot 5 and پ is پنھن, and from it come پنهنجو، پنهنجي، پنهنجيون.
A single-cell whole-word contraction may not. ڳوٺ is dots 1-3-4-5-6, and dots 1-3-4-5-6 is also the letter ڳ, so ڳوٺن written in two cells reads ڳن. A blind reader has no way to tell which was meant, so the word is spelled out.
Three cells that mean one thing alone and another beside a letter
- Dots 1-5 standing alone is اسان. The moment a letter joins it, it is the zer.
- Dots 1-3-6 standing alone is ۽. Between letters it is the pesh.
- Dots 3-4-5-6 standing alone is ماڻھو. In front of a digit it is the number sign, which is why ماڻھون is two cells and not one.
The ordinals are the number sign and the digit, so پهريون is written as the number one. Reading braille back, this software prefers the number, because a document has far more numbers in it than ordinals written out in words.
Where the difficulty is
Every cell below carries more than one meaning in this code. Where it sits settles almost all of them. One does not: at the end of a word, after one of the seven letters that take ھ, dots 2-3-6 are that letter or a question mark and the cells cannot tell you which.
| cell | dots | readings | how it is decided |
|---|
This table is generated from the code tables themselves, not written by hand, so it cannot fall out of step with them. It counts only marks that stand as a single cell. The foreign-word marks and the arithmetic signs are two cells whose halves differ, and they reuse several of the cells above; those are settled by the pair, never by the cell alone.
The contractions add a whole layer of their own, and it is not in this table because it is not a property of any one cell. Every contraction is also a perfectly ordinary uncontracted spelling of something else: dots 1-3-4-5-6 is ڳوٺ contracted and the letter ڳ uncontracted, and dots 3-4-5-6 is ماڻھو contracted and the letter ڻ uncontracted. Nothing in the page says which it is, so contracted braille has to be asked for and is never guessed. Read a Grade 1 book as Grade 2 and it comes out as nonsense.
Four ways of knowing it is right
The first is a blind reader with the page in his hands. The second is the man who wrote the Grade 2 book, going through his own list of contractions out loud. The third is the authority's own printed book. The fourth is three codes that have nothing to do with this project.
One reader, a handful of pages.

Blind readers and writers

Six-key entry turns an ordinary keyboard into a braille writer, with no display and no special hardware. Write in dots, get Sindhi text back, and hear every cell as it is written.

I build things that make a language work on a computer when nobody has done it before.
This project is mine end to end: working through the standard, building the translator and the liblouis tables, designing the verification that checks them, and building this site. It is done in partnership with Riaz Hussain Memon: blind teacher, President of the Pakistan Association of the Blind (Sindh), and a member of the committee that authored the code. He is the authority on what the code says; I am the one who built the software. Mansoor Ali Kori works alongside him on the composing.
If you have a language, a script or a standard that exists on paper and needs to exist in software, I am interested. That means accessibility tooling, low-resource language work, and writing systems that mainstream software ignores.
